Halloween is coming up fast, what does that mean? Candy! Lots and lots of candy, along with hay-rides, corn mazes, pumpkin cake, caramel apples, spooky parties, and so much more. Halloween is a fun time for kids and their favorite part is usually going door-to-door begging for candy. But trick-or-treating is a scary thing for parents, here are some trick-or-treat safety tips for kids this Halloween:
Do not – Be Alone
Younger trick-or-treaters should always be accompanied by an adult when trick-or-treating. If your children are going with a group of friends make sure there are still a few adults present to keep an eye on everyone.
Do not – Run
Costumes (masks, dresses, etc.), darkness, and the candy all comes together to make pretty happy, energized, and dangerous kids. Do not let your kids run in the dark on Halloween night.
Do – Be Seen
Make sure your child is visible to other kids and (more importantly) oncoming traffic. Attach reflector tape to your child’s costume and shoes. And give him or her a flashlight to carry.
Do – Check Curfews
Many towns set specific trick-or-treating times so that residents know when to expect kids at their doors. Follow these curfews.
Do – Check Costumes and Accessories
Costumes should not drag on the ground – it could cause trips and falls especially as darkness falls. And costume accessories should not be dangerous to your child or anyone else – make sure all swords, and other props are soft and harmless.
Do – Check the Candy
At the end of the night all your kids want to do is dump their candy and eat. But make sure you go through first to check wrappers, dates, etc.
Older Kids
If you have older kids and think that they are old enough to go on their own make sure they go with a group of friends. Make sure your child carries a cell-phone and discuss the route he or she is going to take. Discuss a meeting time and place and make sure he or she has a flashlight.
