College is an exciting time in your life. You get to prepare for your desired career, meet friends, attend school functions and many other campus activities. Walking
- Get familiar with your campus. Know your routes to classes, facilities and dorms.
- Avoid walking alone at night.
- Always have your keys in your hand when walking to your vehicle or room.
- Walk in well-lit areas and avoid areas with shrubs and trees.
- Do not accept rides from acquaintances. Only ride with those you know well.
- When someone drops you off ask that they wait until you get inside.
- Be aware of your surroundings when exiting your vehicle.
- If you are being followed, quickly cross the street, enter a school building, find an emergency phone, flag down another person or pull a fire alarm.
Driving
- Always park in a well-lit area.
- Keep your windows closed and door locks.
- Do not offer rides to people you do not know.
- If you think you are being followed, drive to a public area with people. Then stop to allow the vehicle to pass.
- Always view surrounding before exiting your vehicle.
- Check the inside before entering your vehicle.
Residence
- Keep your room and windows locked at all times.
- Never sleep in an area that does not have a lock.
- Always verify the person before opening the front door.
- Anytime you notice something suspicious or receive harassing calls or texts, notify campus security immediately.
- If you room looks as if someone is inside, do not enter and call for assistance.
- Use the “buddy system” when using bathroom and shower facilities.
