When you invest in an alarm system for your home, you receive a sense of safety and security for your family and property. You also get another benefit: peace of mind, knowing that your home and family is monitored 24 hours a day. Even if you are away, someone is watching out for you and can respond to an emergency.
But even the best alarm systems need some help: YOU! It is important that you always use your alarm system once you have it installed. Alarm systems can protect you, your loved ones, and your home–but only when used and maintained according to instructions. You are a vital part of the security team. You must learn how the system works; what it can and cannot do; and how to keep it in proper operating condition.
Take a few minutes to do a quick review:
- Does everyone who has a key know how to fully operate the system?
- In case of an accidental alarm, do you and your family know how to cancel the alarm activation?
- Does your security company have a complete and updated list of all contact phone numbers for your account?
- Do you know where your security system instruction book is?
- Can you quickly find the alarm company names and telephone numbers in order to call and cancel accidental alarm activations, or report any problems?
- If you have motion sensors, are there any holiday or birthday decorations, balloons, or curtains that could set off an alarm after it has been set?
When using alarm systems, you are also contributing to the safety of the neighborhood. A study done by Rutgers showed that as the number of home alarm systems increased, the number of residential robberies decreased in an area, even for homes without alarm systems.
