Having a monitored home security system installed by one of the many alarm companies on Long Island may be the best investment you can make when it comes to peace of mind and the security of your home and family. Once your alarm system is installed, you may want to take a look around your home for some other areas where you can take some additional precautions and further increase the security of your home.
Locks and Keys
Whenever you move into a new home, apartment or condo, it would be wise to either have your locks re-keyed or have new locks installed. If you are thinking about hiding a key outside, in case of a lock-out, it is important that you carefully consider where you will hide it. Under the doormat, a fake rock with a hidden compartment, in the mailbox or hung in the garage are all places that are common and most thieves are familiar. Consider placing a key in a plastic bag and burying it in an (unmarked) location instead. Of course, the best place to keep a spare key is with a trusted neighbor.
Secure Your Windows
Many instances of forced entry occur through a window of your home. Consider outfitting each window in your home with a keyed lock or a sliding pin lock. Good quality “theft-resistant” glass is another good investment in home safety. In the summer when your windows are opened for air circulation, they should be able to be locked in the slightly open position. An inexpensive way to secure a partially open window is a wooden dowel that fits into the window’s track and stops the window from opening fully. Basement windows are often a point of entry and should be outfitted with security bars, especially if a portable window air conditioner is installed.
