Most of our mothers probably voiced this at us at one point in our lives, but we got older, learned how to ride a bike without falling off, and discovered that a bicycle helmet was not the most stylish thing in our wardrobe. We stopped wearing our bicycle helmet and so far we’ve been alright, but is it really worth the risk?
Most EMTs, cops, and doctors will tell you to use a bicycle helmet when riding a bike and they would know why as they are usually the first responders when the unthinkable happens.
But who wants to carry around, let alone wear these clunky plastic things? In order to make wearing a bicycle helmet a more appeasing idea, companies have been re-inventing how we think about and wear helmets. Bern, for instance, makes it a point to bring a little style to your head-gear. If you ride your bike to work, and hate having to carry a bicycle helmet around check out Morpher, the foldable helmet that’s easy to store in a bag or desk. Finally, this European helmet isn’t there until you need it! Hövding is an invention that you wear around your neck that deploys an airbag around your head as soon as it feels you falling.
With more and more people being green and biking to work, there are more and more bikes sharing the roads with cars. If you are not one of the cyclists there are ways you can help prevent injuries as well. Always give bikers a wide berth when passing them on the road, if the road is not very crowded give a friendly beep of the horn to signal you are about to pass, and always check for bikers when you are turning or merging. The less the cyclist needs the helmet, the better off they are.
Protect your head as well or even better than you protect your home and valuables.
