Having your home burglarized is a worst-case scenario for anyone, but it’s an unfortunate reality that we all have to deal with. Fortunately there are several proactive steps you can take to be sure that you are less likely to be a victim.
Simple Burglary Protection Tips
Tip #1: Reinforce and Protect Ingresses
There are more ways into your home than the front door, and whether it’s a side entrance, a basement window or even a balcony, burglars are going to take stock of their options and pick the easiest way in. That’s why your first step should be to re-enforce all the ways into your home (deadbolts on your doors, locks on your windows, etc.). In some cases it’s even a good idea to plant thorny shrubs near windows, making them significantly harder to get to from the outside.
Tip #2: Don’t Leave Your Home In The Dark
While plenty of burglaries happen during the day time, night-time break-ins are appealing because of the cover of darkness. While it’s impractical to leave all your lights on all the time, it is a good idea to install a motion detector light for security purposes. This means that you don’t have your lights on all the time, disturbing your neighbors and other household members, but you will spotlight any intruders on your property.
Tip #3: Don’t Be An Island In Your Neighborhood
One of the best advantages burglars have is that more often than not people don’t want to get involved. If you’re a good neighbor though, and you have friends living near you, then you should tell them when you’re not going to be around, or ask them to keep an eye on your place. Sometimes all it takes to foil a burglary is for someone to notice an unfamiliar car, or to make sure there aren’t any mystery deliveries at the door.
