Attention holiday shoppers… The Season of Taking is upon us.
We’re in that time of year where millions of shoppers are on the prowl for the perfect gifts to give to their loved ones. But there are also other people on the prowl who would have no qualms about stealing from you if given the chance. Those that would just love that new video game system you bought for your kids. You know, the one you left sitting unattended on the front seat of your car in a mall parking lot or in your own driveway? This is why we say when it comes to holiday gifts, do not leave them in your car.
Your car is a very vulnerable place. Think of it this way. It’s a big fish bowl of temptation and easy access. Unless your windows have tinting, would-be thieves can see all shopping bags that are left in plain view on your seats. Maybe you forget to lock your door or maybe you did it on purpose because you’re “only going to be a minute”. Even if you hide your packages in the trunk, someone can still get at them. Locks can be picked. Windows can be smashed. But the quickest, easiest access point for a thief is an unlocked door.
For those of you who think that this could never happen during the “Season of Giving”, think again. Just ask the citizens of Williston Park, where there has been a series of recent vehicle break-ins. As seen on News 12 Long Island, this news story aired Thanksgiving Day. Here we see a man caught on a video security camera roaming through a parking lot trying to open car doors. It was reported that although nothing went missing from the vehicles seen in this security camera footage, items were taken from vehicles close-by.
Remember, in the Season of Taking, there are many Scrooges out there that would love to ruin your holiday. And using your car to stash that video game system isn’t a wise idea. This news story happened in a parking lot, but it could have just as easily happened in your own driveway.
