When we had our first baby in November, she wasn’t the only new addition to our home. We also added a home security system from one of the local alarm companies on Long Island.
It didn’t happen right away. When my daughter was around 3 months old, I was trying to sleep, but the baby monitor was going haywire. The visual part of the screen had lines across it, and rather than hearing the ocean sounds from my daughter’s musical crib attachment, all I heard through the machine was static.
I got up and checked on my baby, then fiddled with the buttons and knobs, aggravated that she, for once, was sleeping and I felt compelled to fix this new, but clearly broken equipment.
As I sat upright in bed doing this, I saw some very bright lights out my bedroom window, where it is usually pitch black. I got up and looked outside. There were three police cars parked in the driveway directly across the road from my house. There were officers running through my neighbor’s backyard and walking across my own lawn.
I observed what went on, but didn’t go outside, because it seemed obvious I would get in the way. As they left, the baby alarm worked fine and I realized that my monitor was somehow experiencing interference from the police radios.
The next day I asked my neighbor what had happened. It seems that an intruder had broken into the sliding door in his backyard, while he was home. It was completely unnerving. I felt terrible for my neighbors, but also realized that it could have just as easily been my house.
Neither of us had an alarm system. Our local police force went door-to-door, because there were a number of break-ins happening and the first thing they told us was that burglars were targeting houses without alarm systems.
Within a week both my neighbor contacted local alarm companies on Long Island and had alarms installed.
I spoke with larger alarm companies and felt that the service wasn’t as personable, the installation options weren’t as customized, and, frankly, I didn’t want a stranger being in my home, at that time. I felt safer choosing local alarm companies on Long Island, and dealing with a small, select business that was basically like hiring a neighbor, who would help protect me, my husband and our new baby.
There are a lot of big, national alarm companies. All Island Security has been the premier of local alarm companies on Long Island since 1989. They offer local monitoring, fast response time, and have thousands of satisfied customers.
I tell all my friends and neighbors not to wait for a scare, like my neighbor and I did.
