As the temperatures begin to heat up, the excitement of spring will send many parents and their children to playgrounds. A playground is a great place to spend an afternoon, let your children socialize, get in some active play time, and soak in some valuable vitamin D.
Unfortunately if parents aren’t paying close enough attention to playground safety a trip to the playground could quickly be followed by a trip to the emergency room. The playground safety says,
“Each year, more than 200,000 children go to U.S. hospital emergency rooms with injuries associated with playground equipment. Most injuries occur when a child falls from the equipment onto the ground. “
To minimize risks, here are a few tips for parents visiting playgrounds.
- Keep your eyes on your children. You will notice risky behavior before they will. If aggressive children are shoving or pushing children near them, transition them to a different area of the playground.
- Choose a playground with shock absorbing ground coverage.
- Tell your child to make sure they can see you while they’re playing. Encourage them not to travel farther away than the distance where they can see you and hear you.
- Remove any accessories from your child that could pose a choking hazard if they were to fall. Scarves, necklaces, backpacks and purses should all be stowed away until after play time.
- Remind your child never to leave the playground with anyone other than you.
- Come prepared. Bring a first aid kit that can stay in the car or in your purse or diaper bag for minor injuries.
