When did you stage your last fire drill in your home? Time can easily slip away, and you might think your last fire drill was only a few months ago. In reality, it might have been a year or more, or possibly never. Maybe you think fire drills only belong in the workplace or at school.
This is a big mistake because with house fires so prevalent all year round, you have to know what to do in order to escape before a fire would get out of control.
How do you set aside time for a fire drill?
Setting Aside a Day to Make Your Fire Drill Clear
Pick a day that everyone in your family is available so you can work on a fire drill together? The important thing is to write down what needs to be done… then do a mock drill so your family memorizes every action.
The first things you need to consider are what your escape routes are going to be. You may need to plan out several different escape routes based on different possible fire scenarios. For the most part, going out your bedroom window is the quickest way to escape if the fire prevents you from going out into the main hallway or living room area.
Put together a location where most of your valuables are so you can rescue them in a hurry if time permits. However, you should never risk your life to save valuables if it means a risk of getting hurt. While it may be impractical to keep all your valuable items in a bag, you may be able to keep your most valuable things in a small safe that you can pick up and take out the window in a hurry.
Then decide where you all should meet outside the home so everyone in the family can be accounted for.
