Summertime is here, and that means trips to the beach. The beach is a great place to relax, play and have fun with the entire family. With this, beach safety needs to be addressed.
What Do Those Flags Mean? You’ve seen those flags flying from the walkways to the beach, but do you know what they mean?
- Red Flag: This flag is the most cautious one. It means that the currents are extremely strong or there may be hazards in the water. Only strong swimmers should enter the water during this time. If there are two red flags, no one is allowed in the water.
- Yellow Flag: This flag means you should swim with caution. The tide is high or strong currents and undertows. If you choose to swim, be near a lifeguard and consider life jackets for younger swimmers.
- Green Flag: Go have fun!
- Blue/Purple: This means marine life, such as, jellyfish and sharks.
Where’s The Lifeguard? It is always smart to know where the lifeguards are positioned. Try to swim as close to their station as possible for extra safety.
Hydration: Being in the sun can quickly dehydrate you. Beach safety includes drinking plenty of fluids throughout the day, water is always best.
Children/Elderly: When beaching with young children or elderly, have someone with them at all times. Swim in groups and consider floating devices. Furthermore, take breaks from the sun by using umbrellas and canopies for beach safety.
Sun/Sand: Apply sunscreen throughout the entire day, most need to be reapplied every 45-80 minutes. Use caution when building sand tunnels, you should never crawl due to the possibility of a collapse.
Going to the beach should be a joyous time and stress-free. Use the tips to prevent negative situations.
